Bridgestone works with customers and suppliers to balance products and services with environmental considerations and reduce its footprint. This effort occurs throughout the lifecycle, from procurement of raw materials to after-use products. This aligns with the goals set in Bridgestone’s Environmental Mission Statement: achieve harmony with nature, value natural resources and reduce CO2 emissions.

For all of its products and services, Bridgestone developed standards for Eco-Products based on the three environmental goals identified above, combined with two user factors: comfort and safety.

Criteria for environmental products

Assessment area Assessment criteria (examples)

In harmony with nature
Harmony with nature Consideration of sustainability in the use of resources, the impact of EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) aspects of raw material used and potential impact if released into the environment during product use

Value natural resources
Minimization of resources used Product weight reduction, water-saving functionality, increased lifespan, waste reduction
Recycling Use of recycled resources, reusability, possibility and ease of dismantlement

Reduce
CO2 emissions
Reduction of CO2 emissions Reduction of CO2 emissions across operations, low fuel consumption, power saving, reduction of CO2 emissions during product use (e.g. reducing rolling resistance of tires), implementing solutions that could help the customer in reducing emissions, moving to renewable energy in manufacturing plants, CO2 reduction across our raw material supply chain
Comfort Low road noise
Safety Wet grip, ice traction

Initiatives for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

Bridgestone has been working to establish a foundation for conducting its products’ Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). A Global Common LCA guideline for tires was established to promote the use of LCA for the evaluation of products, including Greenhouse Gas Emissions and other environmental impacts.
