UNEVEN TREAD WEAR (SHOULDER)

PHENOMENON

Rubber wearing is much progressed at "shoulder area" of tread.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

Underinflation will lead to excessive tread shoulder wear. It will also lead to high tire deflection and subsequent heat build-up which may result in tire damage.

RECOMMENDATION
  • - The shoulder groove should be considered worn once wear reaches up to 1/8 of the circumference at one point or fabric/tire protector ply is visible at any point in the shoulder.
  • - Wear from the initial point of shoulder groove worn down to 1/8 circumference can take several landing cycles. Plan for removal at the next convenient maintenance opportunity once wear reaches the bottom of the shoulder groove.
  • - If in doubt about interpreting shoulder groove worn out, refer to the center groove depth to assess the tire wear limit. Examine all possible operational causes that could accentuate shoulder wear.
