Total Environmental Advanced Management System (TEAMS)

At the Bridgestone Group, our Total Environmental Advanced Management System (TEAMS) serves as a foundation for environmental activities. In acquiring and maintaining the ISO 14001 certifications at our manufacturing site, we have implemented our Environmental Management System (EMS) framework across the Group. TEAMS was developed by adding the following two concepts to EMS:

Total: the participation of all business units, facility functions and employees throughout the Group
Advanced: our commitment to active disclosure and advanced, world-class activities

Following the TEAMS concept, each strategic business unit (SBU) and each facility in the Group prepare and adopt an EMS using methodologies employed by ISO 14001. Environmental activities are then improved through the use of the plan-do-check-act (PDCA) cycle at three levels: individual facilities, SBUs, and globally.

As a basis for supporting TEAMS, we also are striving to provide and consolidate shared global information systems, working toward improvement by analyzing each SBUs’ environmental activities and data through the Group’s PDCA cycle. We are implementing various system and human resource development measures to strengthen environmental management at SBUs and business locations.

Since 2013, all non-production sites including logistics sites and retail shops have conducted environmental self-assessments, grading each location with one of three levels (I, II, or III) for environmental management. Based on the assessment results we further improve our environmental Management utilizing a PDCA cycle.

We also hold conferences for environmental managers to enhance the environmental training structure of the entire Group. These trainings include on-site lectures and discussions among participants, aimed at enhancing the capabilities of environmental managers and strengthening regional cooperation.

ISO 14001 certification demonstrates environmental commitment

The Bridgestone Group requires all manufacturing locations with 50 employees or more (156 locations) to achieve ISO 14001 environmental management certification. Achieving this certification shows that operations are continuously working to minimize their impacts on the environment and comply with applicable environmental laws and regulations. At the end of 2018, 154 manufacturing locations (98.7%) were ISO 14001 certified.

Global environmental management

The Bridgestone Group has an organization structure in which three meeting bodies, Global CSR Enhancement Committee (GCEC), Global Environment Working Group (WG) and Strategic Business Units (SBUs), coordinate and cooperate to enhance the TEAMS activities in accordance with the Mid-term Plan. Global Environment WG and GCEC supervised by Global EXCO develop global environment strategies and policies. Once strategies and policies are authorized, each SBU implement them through each EMS.

Also, to strengthen the coordination of global and regional environmental activities, we have established the Global Environment WG which consists of members from regional environment functions

Factory production qualification system

The Bridgestone Group has adopted a proprietary factory production qualification system based on ISO 14001 to rapidly identify and minimize environmental risks at new factories and production lines.

It is a four-stage system for checking and certifying the environmental management systems at new factories: make an environmental plan, implement a preliminary environmental review when building a new factory or production line, and prepare environmental policies, legal compliance and environmental training programs.

Environmental responsibility throughout the supply chain

Working together with suppliers, the Bridgestone Group developed the Global Sustainable Procurement Policy to promote environmentally responsible business throughout the supply chain.

The Group is monitoring and rating the CSR management system of our suppliers using third-party assessments as a tool to encourage suppliers to enhance their environmental commitment. We hold CSR training sessions and provide on-site support based on the assessment results and are working together with suppliers in their environmental activities.

Bridgestone has been an engaged member of the Japan Business Initiative for Biodiversity since 2010 to further promote environmental conservation. As a member of the working group consisting of various businesses, we are involved in researching techniques that are useful when businesses implement measures to conserve biodiversity by eliminating impacts of the supply chain and to visualize impacts on the environment.

Procurement with low environmental footprint

The Bridgestone Group requires that all of our raw materials and component suppliers comply with their national and regional regulations on use of hazardous substances and materials. We also require that suppliers eliminate the use of chemical products from the early stages if any hazardous substances are suspected in such products.

Prior to purchasing any components from suppliers, Bridgestone conducts an environmental management review of suppliers based on the Group’s outsourcing authorization system. In this review, we examine the suppliers’ overall environmental management and programs. In addition to checking suppliers’ management systems on chemical products, we also check those systems managing air, water, noise, vibration, odor and industrial waste. If any item requiring improvement is identified, we notify the supplier of the issue and ask them to make any and all needed improvements. Additionally, prior to purchasing new production equipment, we request that suppliers provide us with information on the use of hazardous substances in the equipment, if any, in the quotation.
